<a href=\"https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/?page_id=633\">Changes at Burton Phoenix <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Burton Phoenix &#8211; A layout born out of the ashes of the original &#8216;Burton Crumpnold&#8217;<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of 2008 the room that housed the original Burton Crumpnold became part of an extension on our house, and for a while would have no roof.<br>..In addition I had become very dissatisfied with the quality of the track running, it was after all my first &#8216;proper&#8217; layout, and many mistakes were made. <br>The layout &#8216;Looked&#8217; OK but trains have a habit of derailing at the rear (and difficult to access) area&#8217;s of the track. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>So.. the decision was made to &#8216;decommission&#8217; the layout<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But all would not be lost as the Upper Station board could be reused to become part of a new &#8216;End to End&#8217; style layout.<br><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"233\" class=\"wp-image-329\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/layout_upperlevel.gif\" alt=\"layout_upperlevel\"><br><strong>A schematic of the original Burton Crumpnold &#8216;Upper Station&#8217; a new &#8216;Fiddle Yard&#8217;.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>To me the obvious solution was to add a simple &#8216;Fiddle Yard&#8217; board to the existing &#8216;Station, and scenery\/ centre  boards as shown below.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"117\" class=\"wp-image-656\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Burton-Pheonix-Board-Layout-Original_S.jpg\" alt=\"Burton Pheonix Board Layout Original_S\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Burton-Pheonix-Board-Layout-Original_S.jpg 1020w, https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Burton-Pheonix-Board-Layout-Original_S-600x101.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/Burton-Pheonix-Board-Layout-Original_S-768x129.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The fiddle yard board was built using 2&#215;1 timber with the usual plywood and cork top.<\/strong><br>The space at the front of the fiddle yard was to give some scenery space to &#8216;hide&#8217; the fiddle yard.<br>I used new (left over) &#8216;Hornby&#8217; track and &#8216;recycled&#8217; point motors from the original Burton Crumnold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"700\" height=\"219\" class=\"wp-image-659\" style=\"width: 700px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/draftfiddleyard.png\" alt=\"Burton Phoenix draftfiddleyard\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/draftfiddleyard.png 767w, https:\/\/www.burtoncrumpnold.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/draftfiddleyard-600x188.png 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here is the new fiddle yard board fitted to the existing boards.<\/strong><br>A small &#8216;extension&#8217; <br>.. The existing Upper Station boards power and points were already wired up with it&#8217;s own 25 way connector.<br>I left all this in place and added a new 25 way connector at the &#8216;Fiddle Yard&#8217; end.  Now I needed a new control box..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I decided to use my limited woodworking skills, and spare timber\/mdf to make my own control box. <br>..
